Credit cards laid out together representing a card strategy

The "Chase Trifecta" is the single most efficient way to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points, and it doesn’t require a single premium annual fee beyond the $95 on the Sapphire Preferred. The idea: hold three specific Chase cards at once, so that no category of spending ever earns less than 1.5% back — and every bit of it becomes a transferable point instead of plain cash.
On their own, Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited earn "Chase cash back" — technically Ultimate Rewards points, but redeemable only for a flat 1 cent each if the account holder doesn’t also have a Sapphire or Ink Preferred/Reserve card open. The moment you hold a Sapphire Preferred in the same login, Chase lets you pool every point earned across all linked cards into the Sapphire account — at which point the entire balance becomes transferable to United, Hyatt, Virgin Atlantic, and the rest of Chase’s partner list, at the same 1:1 rate as if you’d earned it directly on the Preferred.
Take a household spending $12,000/year in Freedom Flex’s activated rotating categories (capped at $1,500/quarter = $6,000/year at 5%, the rest falling to 1%), $15,000/year on Freedom Unlimited’s flat 1.5%, and $6,000/year on Sapphire Preferred dining and groceries at 3x:
That’s roughly 76,500 points a year from ordinary spending, before counting any welcome bonuses — all pooled into one transferable balance worth $1,300 to $1,500+ depending on how it’s redeemed, versus the flat $765 it would be worth as plain cash back on the two no-fee cards alone.
The trifecta isn’t exotic — it’s three ordinary Chase cards used together instead of separately. The entire value unlock comes from one fact: cash back and transferable points are the same points, and which one you get depends only on whether a Sapphire card is open in the same account.
