American Express Gold Review (2026)
A foodie-focused travel card with outstanding earning potential on dining and groceries.

Our expert verdict
The American Express Gold Card is the premier everyday spending card for diners and grocery shoppers in 2026. Earning 4x at every restaurant worldwide and 4x at U.S. supermarkets generates Membership Rewards points at a rate no competitor matches for these categories at this price tier. The 2026 addition of 5x on Amex Travel hotel bookings and Hertz Five Star status meaningfully rounds out its travel credentials. Nearly $424 in annual credits from dining, Uber, Resy, and Dunkin' can reduce the effective annual cost well below $100 for active users. Its primary weakness is the absence of airport lounge access, which forces heavy travelers to also carry a lounge-enabled card. For urban dwellers with strong dining and grocery spend, this is the best daily driver in the Membership Rewards ecosystem.

Advanced tips & tricks
Stack with Rakuten
Link your Membership Rewards account with Rakuten to earn MR points instead of cash back on online shopping, adding 1-10% in points on many purchases.
Combine with Other Amex Cards
Pair with the Blue Business Plus (2X on all purchases up to $50,000/year) to ensure you're earning at least 2X on categories not covered by the Gold Card.
Use Pay With Points Selectively
While you can use points to pay for travel at 1 cent per point, transfers to airline partners often yield 1.5-3+ cents per point in value.
Offset Annual Fee Through Credits
Stack the $120 dining, $120 Uber, $100 Resy, and $84 Dunkin' credits (up to $424/year) to more than offset the $325 annual fee if you can use them.
Frequently asked questions
How do the dining credits work?
The $120 annual dining credit is distributed as a $10 monthly statement credit when you use your card at eligible partners, which currently include Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar, and participating Five Guys and Shake Shack locations. Enrollment is required and the credit applies automatically when you make a qualifying purchase.
Can I use my points for cash back?
While you can redeem Membership Rewards points for statement credits, the value is poor at 0.6 cents per point. For better value, consider transferring to airline or hotel partners or using points for travel bookings through Amex Travel at 1 cent per point.
Does the Gold Card have lounge access?
The Gold Card does not include airport lounge access. If lounge access is important to you, consider the Platinum Card, which offers access to the Centurion Lounge network, Priority Pass lounges, and Delta Sky Clubs (when flying Delta).
Is the 4X on supermarkets available internationally?
No, the 4X points category for supermarkets only applies to U.S. supermarkets. International grocery purchases earn the standard 1X point per dollar. However, the 4X on dining is available worldwide at restaurants.
